In 2024, the First Gundam was released under a new lineup called the Best Mecha Collection. The concept behind this series is to recreate the proportions of the old kits using modern technology. It came out with proportions nearly identical to the 1980 old-kit 1/144 First Gundam, but with impressive color separation applied throughout.
The color separation is spot-on — not just the face and chest, but even the V-shape on the crotch and the shield are perfectly separated, making the overall parts breakdown quite similar to the EG First Gundam. That said, the parts division, assembly feel, and articulation are all clearly designed with a modern kit sensibility. The chunky, broad-shouldered proportions unique to the old kits come through really nicely in that charming old-school way, which gives us older fans a real sense of nostalgia. Even younger builders who aren't used to these proportions might find it fun depending on their taste.
The articulation is slightly better than the old kit, but it's intentionally kept a bit stiff. On the flip side, the joints move smoothly while holding poses well, which is impressive for a polycap-less design. As for weapons, the standard armament set is included, but if you want to show one beam saber drawn from the backpack, you'll need to disassemble the backpack and remove the entire beam saber section — which is a bit of a hassle.
The concept is clear and the overall quality feels solid, so this is definitely a lineup I'm looking forward to seeing more of. I'd love to see main MS units like the Zaku, Gouf, and GM get releases down the line. That said, ¥1,200 feels a bit steep for the small box and what's inside — the EG First with pretty much the same contents was ¥700, so the pricing is a little puzzling. Either way, this is a kit I'd happily recommend to old-school fans as well as anyone intrigued by its unique style :-)
