Following the Gunpla-Kun DX Set,the Zakupla-Kun DX Set has also been released as an injection plastic model. After Gunpla-Kun came out in April 2023, I figured Zakupla-Kun would follow right away — it didn't look like it would be particularly difficult to develop — but here we are, two years later.
The basic parts layout and format are the same as the Gunpla-Kun DX Set, with that classic SD look featuring an oversized head and slender limbs. The mono-eye even has color separation, so the straight build looks great right out of the box. The limb articulation is limited by the structure, but there is a mono-eye rotation gimmick — though the rotating part is a little loose, so the eye can end up drifting around on its own sometimes.
There's one big difference from Gunpla-Kun worth mentioning. While Gunpla-Kun used a somewhat soft and flexible plastic, Zakupla-Kun comes in a typical PS Gunpla material. That makes the assembly feel a lot more familiar, and there are no parts you'd worry about snapping. With Gunpla-Kun, the soft material meant the beam rifle scope and the backpack's beam saber were easy to break — so it's a relief that Zakupla-Kun doesn't have that problem.
The DX Set also includes runner parts, so you can disassemble the Zakupla-Kun body and display it on the runners. Personally, I think displaying it on the runners looks even more charming and put-together.
Overall, the quality is clean and the improved plastic material makes this feel like a more solid release than Gunpla-Kun. Personally, I find it even cuter than Gunpla-Kun. Assembly is super easy too, so it's great for beginners — honestly a kit I'd recommend to anyone who loves Gunpla. If you can, displaying it as a pair with Gunpla-Kun makes it even better :-)
