Kotobukiya PREVIEW

MSG Mechanical Chain Base A/B/C

* This review is a preview based on a test shot or prototype, prior to the official product release.
The prototype was provided with support from Kotobukiya / Hobby Club / Gundam Mart.

* The Mechanical Chain Base used in this preview comes in three separate types — Type A, Type B, and Type C,
and while the base itself is the same across all types, the accessories differ slightly between them.

Scheduled for release in Japan in June 2007, this product is not an MS or mecha kit — it's a background or diorama display base. It's called the Mechanical Chain Base, and it's a LEGO-like kit that lets you expand infinitely in any direction — up, down, left, or right — by linking multiple bases together.

The Mechanical Chain Base (MCB for short, because typing it out every time is a pain) currently planned for release comes in three types — A, B, and C — each with the same base but slightly different accessories.

Type A: wall hangers, shield stand
Type B: wall corridor, crane
Type C: L-shaped wall corridor, missile stand, etc.

This base is primarily optimized for 1/144 scale, but with some expansion it seems like it could work reasonably well for 1/100 too. The connection gimmick between bases holds together fairly securely without feeling loose, and the overall detail level of the base is decent enough.

It's a Kotobukiya product, but honestly, no matter how you look at it, this feels much more like it's targeting Bandai's HGUC and MG lines than Kotobukiya's own 1/144 SRW kits — and in practice, it does seem to have more value as a display base for Gundam MS.

If you're after a unique display setup or want to build an interior diorama, this should be a pretty charming and fun little product :-)
