Gundam 30th Anniversary

Special Clear Parts

Release date: December 2009 / Price: ¥5,000

This kit is the MG clear exterior parts version released to commemorate Gundam's 30th anniversary. It's essentially the same contents as the original kit, but with one extra set of clear runners added. In other words, it lets you choose between the standard armor and clear armor for certain exterior parts, so for the basic kit features please refer to the normal version review — this review only covers the added clear parts.

MG Nu Gundam Review

◆ Where It's Applied and the Effect

3 fin funnels, one arm, and one leg have been made into clear parts. Among clear event kits, this is a pretty clean clear parts lineup — since the entire white armor on one arm and one leg has been fully made clear, it looks really nice. The inner frame is quite well-detailed for a somewhat older MG, and you can see it clearly, especially on the leg where the dark, hefty-looking die-cast parts are also visible. Also, since the arm and leg clear parts are perfectly symmetrical, you can choose to assemble them on either the left or right side.

As for the fin funnels, there aren't really any mechanical elements inside, but you do get the neat effect of seeing the various locking mechanisms through them. That said, the arm and leg clear armor effects are so good that the fin funnel clear parts can feel a bit underwhelming by comparison.

◆ Difficulty of Swapping Parts

The armor on the arms and legs is just clipped onto the frame, so swapping those out is fairly easy. The fin funnel armor swap, however, is a bit tricky. You'll need to carefully figure out where the snap-fit pins are and gently pry them off, so take your time with that.

◆ Overall Impressions

Since this kit uses two duplicate runners to cover the left and right sides, the big selling point is that one entire arm and one entire leg are cleanly made clear. The inner frame is pretty good to begin with, so the effect really shines here. Sure, the clear parts are essentially a bonus, but this is one of the rare event kits that actually delivers a solid, convincing effect rather than feeling half-baked. :-)
