Gundam 30th Anniversary

Special Clear Parts

Release date: 2009. 12 / Price: ¥3,800

This kit is the MG clear exterior parts version released to commemorate Gundam's 30th anniversary. It's essentially the same contents as the original kit, but with one extra clear runner added. In other words, it lets you choose between standard armor and clear armor for certain exterior parts, so for the basic kit features please refer to the normal version review — this review only covers the added clear parts.

MG Freedom Gundam Review

◆ Coverage and Effect

The rail gun mounts on the side skirts and the entire leg armor on both sides have been made clear. Usually it's just half an arm or leg, or only a portion that gets the clear treatment, but interestingly enough, due to the runner layout on Freedom Gundam, the entire lower legs on both sides ended up clear. It's a special clear version that kind of looks like it forgot to put its pants on (?)

Overall, the transparency of the clear parts is very high, and the inner mold detail on the armor is quite fine, so the see-through effect looks fantastic. It does leave you wishing the whole body had been made clear — that would've looked even more amazing.

◆ Difficulty of Swapping Parts

Being a SEED kit, swapping and removing armor is generally pretty easy across the board, but the top of the foot area does require a bit of care. If you don't get a good feel for where the locking pins are before pulling things apart, there's a real risk of breakage, so watch out.

◆ Overall Impressions

It's a bit odd that only the lower half ended up going full clear, but as a special clear kit, the effect is 100% there — it's an excellent release. The fact that the inner mold detail on the armor is better than most other kits is a big selling point.
