Gundam 30th Anniversary

Special Clear Parts

Release date: March 2010 / Price: ¥4,500

This kit is the MG clear exterior parts version released to commemorate Gundam's 30th anniversary. It's essentially the same contents as the original kit, with just one extra clear runner added. In other words, it lets you choose between standard armor and clear armor for certain specific parts, so for the basic kit features please refer to the normal version review — this review only covers the added clear parts.

MG Crossbone Gundam X-1 Full Cloth Review

◆ Coverage and Effect

Among the special clear parts releases, this one is fairly rare in that the entire armor on both arms and legs has been made clear, with the bonus of the X-shape on the back getting the clear treatment as well. Because the kit is small, a single runner is more than enough to cover about 70% of the body in clear, and the effect is really impressive as a result.

The issue is that the Full Cloth's signature cloak ends up hiding the clear parts on the arms and legs... Honestly, it might look better applied to the X-1 without the cloak. And in fact, these clear parts can be used on the cloakless Crossbone X-1 as-is — it does look much better that way. When applied to the X-1, the number of clear parts isn't that different from the F91 which shares a similar compact frame, but stand the two side by side and the difference in effect is night and day. Overall the transparency is high and a large surface area is covered, so the see-through effect is great, and even the molded details on the inside of some armor pieces show through nicely.

◆ Difficulty of Swapping

It's not a particularly tricky kit to swap parts on, but there are so many parts to replace that it does take a fair amount of time. The kit is small and the connections are on the tight side, so as long as you're careful about the position of the connection pins when disassembling, the difficulty itself isn't that high. For the X-shape on the back, the bonded surface area is large, so you'll want to be careful when taking it apart to avoid breaking anything.

More than anything, the various cloak parts just get in the way and make the whole process a bit of a hassle.. ^^;

◆ Overall

This is one of the best clear options among the 30th anniversary special clear parts releases — easily top 5 — delivering an effect that's practically on par with a full-body clear treatment. The fact that this level of clear parts was added with no price increase is something to be genuinely grateful for :-)

That said, as mentioned above, the effect really takes a hit in Full Cloth mode, and if you're going to display it with the clear parts, you're much better off going with the bare X-1 form~
