With the HGUC GM Ground Type released in 2017.

The second 08th MS Team 1/144 kit is the GM Ground Type. The basic setup looks similar to the previous 1/144 Gundam Ground Type, but the parts configuration is actually quite different — and the overall quality feels subtly better.

First off, the joint strength is generally improved compared to the Gundam Ground Type. At first glance the limb articulation looks a little more limited, but it actually tends to hold poses better. In particular, the chest armor structure was redesigned, which allowed them to bring back the cockpit hatch open gimmick that was left out on the Gundam Ground Type. There's no cockpit sculpt inside — it really just opens like a lid — but it still feels like a step up.

The weapon loadout stays faithful to the source material too, so you can pull off some nice poses with the signature missile launcher and rocket launcher. It's interesting — the articulation isn't great, yet the poses somehow come out looking really good.

Anyway, it is an upgrade over the Gundam kit, but the HGUC GM Ground Type turned out so well that the quality gap still feels pretty significant. The HGUC GM Ground Type came out in 2017 — a full 10 years after the HGUC Gundam Ground Type from 2007 — which makes the difference even more pronounced. Either way, it seems like the tradition of the supporting unit getting released later and coming out with higher quality holds true then and now. :-)  [ Updated at 2018.3.15 ]
