The sixth kit in the old 0080 series is the 1/144 Gelgoog-J. Much like its predecessor the Rick Dom II, it shows a massive leap in visual quality compared to the older 1/144 Gelgoog. The color separation is one thing, but in terms of proportions this is definitely a step forward for the Gelgoog.

The mono-eye color separation that's characteristic of the 0080 series is here too, but unfortunately — unlike the Rick Dom II or Hygogg — the red mono-eye tends to get lost against the bright pink background. The body also lacks color separation on the torso and feet compared to the HGUC, so in terms of parts breakdown it feels like a step back from the Rick Dom II.

As for joint strength, the dedicated polycaps are well done and deliver stability on par with HGUC. Like the Rick Dom II, thick connecting pins are used at the elbows and knees, giving it an even more solid hold. Articulation-wise, the skirt is fixed just like on the Rick Dom II, which limits hip joint range of motion — but the slimmer build seems to help, and poses come out looking a bit more natural overall.

So while the parts breakdown leaves something to be desired compared to the other 0080 series kits, it's still meaningful as a refined upgrade of the classic Gelgoog silhouette. The real kicker is that the HGUC Gelgoog-J that came out in 2004 was such an outstanding kit that this one ends up looking even more old-school by comparison — which is a bit of a shame. :-)
