Our hero, the RX-78 Gundam, was the third release in the old 1/100 Real Type series. Unlike the standard 1/100 Gundam which was all washed-out white, the molded colors here — a combination of dark gray and black — give it a much heavier, cooler look. On top of that, the molded colors have expanded to three shades — black, dark gray, and dark brown — with the upper and lower body each molded in different colors, making the whole thing feel a bit more colorful too. For a detailed structural review, please check out the 1/100 RX-78 Gundam reviewfor reference.
The amount of decals was neither too many nor too few — roughly 3 to 4 hours should be plenty to get them all on. Thankfully, the waterslide decals were in pretty good condition for their age, so the work went relatively smoothly. The waterslide decals go not just on the body, but also on the shield, Core Fighter, and bazooka — and they really do make a difference as accent details.
Anyway, with the more varied molded colors and the added decals, the overall look is a huge step up from the standard version visually. If you want to build an old 1/100 First Gundam but don't feel like painting, and the standard 1/100 Gundam looks too plain for your taste, the Real Type Gundam might just be worth a shot. :-)
