This kit is the MSV 1/144 Guncannon II, and it also happens to be the very first kit I ever painted. I still vividly remember buying enamel paint for the first time and trying to brush it on without any thinner, only to end up completely frustrated.. ^^;
As one of the MSV kits that was also released under the Academy label back in the '80s, I'm sure there are plenty of old-school fans out there who have fond memories of this one. For its time, I think it was pretty popular — it took the rounded look of the original Guncannon and gave it a sharper, more edgy upgrade.
On the Guncannon II, the cannons that were originally mounted on both shoulders have been consolidated into a single beam cannon on the right side, switching from a live-ammo firing system to a beam cannon. A multi-purpose precision targeting device is mounted on the left shoulder. The original dual live-ammo cannons are also included, though since everything has to be glued down, it's not a swap-out system — you have to choose one configuration before you build.
Articulation isn't anything to get excited about — it's the stiff, limited movement you'd expect from an old-kit MSV. That said, the joint strength is actually pretty good for an old kit, so whatever pose you put it in, it holds well. The overall silhouette is chunkier and more imposing compared to the original Guncannon, and the noticeably larger backpack and verniers really stand out.
All in all, this is one of the more striking designs among the old MSV kits, and it's a solid MSV kit that can hold its own with just a paint job and no major modifications. :-)
