OLD Char's Counter Attack

1/144 Jegan

Release 1988.3
Price ¥500

Straight build + Stickers

The fifth kit in the old Char's Counterattack lineup is the 1/144 Jegan. It's essentially the Char's Counterattack version of a GM — the most bare-bones kit in the series, coming in at a cheap ¥500. Maybe because of that low price, there's no system injection runner and the color separation is lacking, so the straight build looks a bit underwhelming compared to the earlier kits. The teal molded color in particular looks like it came off a candy toy, giving it a pretty strong old-kit vibe overall.

That said, proportions-wise it's actually a pretty solid old kit — as you can see in the comparison photos above, the silhouette is surprisingly close to the HGUC. In fact, thanks to that sturdy, stocky feel typical of older kits, a painted-up version might actually hold its own against the HGUC, or even surpass it in terms of presence.

That said, following in the footsteps of the Jagd Doga and Sazabi, the arms only bend inward, which is pretty frustrating articulation-wise. The grip on the articulated hands is still weak too, so watching it barely hang onto even the small rifle is a bit sad. Still, the kit is small and light, which makes posing easy and things stay in place well — and even with those inward-only arms, the poses it can pull off aren't actually that bad.

All in all, this is a kit that really shows its age visually, but as a cheap and straightforward old kit for painting practice, it's a pretty decent pick. :-)
