Over Flag

Kit Review

The Flag has finally gotten a 1/100 release, and the first one out of the gate is the Over Flag. Just like how recent 1/100 kits have leaped ahead of older ones in terms of quality, this one comes out as a standout kit in terms of overall detail and construction. It's pretty obvious they'll be rolling out all kinds of variations down the line, but either way, this was a kit I was personally looking forward to.

The HG Over Flag was a decent kit in its own right, but honestly the HG Flag series has always had a tendency toward weak joints and poor stability. The 1/100 addresses a lot of that — the leg joints and hip joints in particular are not just sturdy, they're downright stiff. On the flip side, the wing flaps tend to fall off easily, and there are so many joints all over the place that it takes a bit of time to get a good pose locked in... but at least the joint strength is solid enough to pass muster.

Moving up to 1/100 naturally brings a big jump in overall detail, but what really stands out are all the added features. For starters, you can now open the forearm cover and fold the sonic blade away for storage, and opening the shin cover reveals missiles mounted inside. The wing flaps are separate parts that allow for a bit of movement, and you can swap them out for open-flap parts to recreate the braking mode. The downside is that the flaps don't hold very well and keep falling off (especially the rear wing flaps...), which gets a little annoying.

Also, just like the recently released MG Force Impulse, the 1/100 Over Flag comes with landing gear. Having the landing gear deployed does give it a certain presence... though oddly enough the center of gravity doesn't sit right and it tends to tip backward. There's also a 1/100 figure included with its own stand — something you don't even get with most MG kits — and the level of detail is MG-quality, so it looks really impressive. On top of that, there are some nicely detailed resin-style hand parts, and overall the accessory lineup is pretty luxurious. Articulation isn't something you'd expect much from a transforming kit, but the solid joint strength at least makes posing fairly easy.

The transformation gimmick has also been improved over the HG — when you tilt the body backward, an internal mechanism automatically retracts the head. On the HG it was a bit awkward to grab and pull out by hand, but the 1/100 has a much cleaner and more refined transformation. The rest of the transformation is pretty much the same, but oddly enough the rifle locks in much less securely in flight mode compared to the HG. It plugs into the top of the fuselage by the handle, but it's a bit of a loose fit and tends to wobble around. You can help things a bit by deliberately narrowing the extended waist section back down a little, but even then the slightest movement sends it rattling in all directions and you can't get it to stay put. The knee landing gear also doesn't hold well and pops out easily.

Overall, this is a generously packed and fairly luxurious kit that lives up to the improved quality of recent 1/100 releases — but there's a nagging feeling that the finishing touches are just about 2% short of where they should be. I especially wish the flight mode had a tighter fit... but it's definitely a different experience from the HG. The sheer size gives it a commanding presence, and the flight mode really does look like an actual aircraft — it's got plenty of personality and a lot going for it. If you're a Flag fan, this kit will definitely give you plenty of fun building it :-)
