The Tieren Ground Type, which caused quite a sensation back in its HG days,
has now been released in 1/100 as well. It was already an impressively imposing kit
at the 1/144 scale, so there was definitely some excitement about just how
much more presence it would have at 1/100.
Especially since the HG Tieren was already pretty high quality to begin with...
As expected, the 1/100 Tieren's presence is absolutely insane..
Gundam Virtue (a.k.a. "Deokgeun Gundam") has its own kind of bulk,
but the Tieren with its genuine military hardware feel comes across
as even more solid and imposing. Value-for-money presence satisfaction: A+.
And thanks to the Tieren's signature hip joint structure, it shows off
some seriously impressive leg articulation — just like the HG.
The real highlight of the 1/100 Tieren is its jaw-dropping detail..
Other 1/100 No Grade kits also have fairly elaborate panel lines for their grade,
but compared to the Tieren, they don't even come close!
The entire body is packed with an insane amount of military detail.
It seems like they were going for that feel of a genuine "military weapon" —
almost like a tank. Thanks to that, even though it's a fictional machine,
the sense of realism you get from it — like a real military kit — is no joke.
Also, the Tieren bazooka — making its first appearance in the 1/100 lineup — is quite something. The design, proportions, and functionality are all way cooler and more impressive than the bazooka included in MG kits. True to the Tieren's character, the weapon is designed to lock onto the forearm, so when you attach the bazooka, both the forearm mount and the grip work together to hold it really securely — that's a big plus. I already thought the HG Tieren was pretty good, but the 1/100 just blows the HG out of the water in every way.
That said, being bigger and heavier than the HG, the overall joint strength feels a bit unstable. In particular, the hip joints tend to pop out during posing, and there are cases where the ankle polycaps can't handle the weight and just give way. The polycaps shared across the 1/100 No Grade kits showed just average stiffness — that was fine enough for something Exia-sized, but for heavier kits like the Virtue or Tieren, it leaves a bit to be desired... If only the joints had been stiffer, this kit would've been really, really sharp. A bit of a shame. At least the shoulders are on the stiffer side, so the arms can hold up vertically even while carrying the heavy bazooka — small mercies. :-)
On top of that, there are three 1/100 figures included, and with the hatch-open and pilot-exposed feature, you can pull off some pretty fun display scenes. The orange chest parts that were a complaint point on the HG are now properly color-separated here, and overall the quality exceeds what I was expecting.
Anyway, the No Grade 1/100 line has been turning heads lately with some surprisingly solid quality, and the 1/100 Tieren Ground Type seems to deliver satisfaction well above its price point with quality beyond expectations. With amazing detail and a great overall presence that rivals MG kits, this one looks set to be a real winner. ^^
