00 Raiser ~ Designer's Color ver.

Kit Review

Following the HG release, a Designer's Color version of the 00 Raiser has now arrived in 1/100 scale as well. The standard 00 Raiser included not just the 00 Gundam + 0 Raiser combo, but also a Celestial Being action base in clear green, bringing the price up to ¥5000. This Designer's Color version drops the action base, but adds the GN Sword III, two beam parts runners, one light-up gimmick, and a gorgeous set of seals — all at the same ¥5000 price point. (In terms of content and quality, it feels like a slightly better deal than the action base.)

The Designer's Color version features soft, pastel-toned molded colors — and yeah, it's pretty much a recolor kit — but this one actually throws in some surprises beyond just the GN Sword III and beam parts: there's also an unexpected light-up gimmick included. This gimmick is housed inside the body and is designed to light up the clear parts in the head — and it turns out this was already planned from the very beginning during the design phase of the 1/100 00 Gundam. I remember thinking it was oddly strange how many clear parts were packed inside the head when I built the 1/100 00 Gundam, and sure enough, it was all there to support the light-up feature.

My guess is that including the head light-up unit alongside the shoulder light-up gimmicks on both sides would've pushed the cost too high, so they left it out of the standard 00 Gundam / 00 Raiser releases — but either way, the Designer's Color version comes fully loaded. Since the head light-up unit illuminates the eyes as well as the clear parts on the sides and rear of the head, it does a great job of making the most out of a single light source.

On top of that, the newly added GN Sword III shows off solid color separation, gimmicks, and detail, and — just like the HG Trans-Am Raiser — the blade section is done in clear green parts, which gives it a really premium look. There's also a separate set of seals made specifically for the Designer's Color version, and the sheer quantity and quality of them easily surpasses most MGs.

The 00 Raiser kit itself is already a masterpiece in the No Grade lineup, so there's no need to worry about quality — and even with all that bulk strapped on, it has absolutely no trouble holding a standing pose. Action poses are also great; the joints are much sturdier compared to Exia, so it holds its angles really well. The only thing to watch out for is that the added beam parts are quite large and heavy, so they do have a slight tendency to droop downward.

Overall, this is a kit you could genuinely call the definitive version of the 00 Raiser — a full-option kit packing special weapons and three light-up gimmicks, with outstanding quality and functionality. Some folks might find the non-canon coloring a bit off-putting, but compared to the standard release, the pastel tone actually feels more premium, and on its own it has a way of looking like it should cost more. ^^;

The price tag is up there in MG territory, which is a bit of a stretch — but then again, the quality is pretty much MG-level too. :-)
