Right at the end of OO Season 1 and just before Season 2 kicked off, the HG 00 Gundam was released — probably to build up some early hype. The rough silhouette had shown up at the end of Season 1, but honestly.. it wasn't a kit I was particularly excited about design-wise. Sure enough, even looking at the release photos, there didn't seem to be any major design changes to speak of.
Every now and then Bandai likes to give Gunpla fans a pleasant surprise from behind, and this HG OO is one of those cases.. To cut straight to the point — in terms of articulation, a truly "revolutionary" Gunpla has been born.
For a long time, the polycaps used in Bandai's HG Gunpla hadn't changed much. They'd been recycling pretty much the same polycaps for an almost ridiculous amount of time.. One of the first things that stands out about the HG OO is exactly that — the polycap design and layout has been completely overhauled. That's something we haven't seen in a very long time. On top of these new polycaps, despite being a 1/144 HG, the elbows, knees, and waist all feature double joints, and the skirt attachment points have been replaced with new polycap ball joints — there are a lot of new ideas at work here.
Most notably, the introduction of those unusual ankle joints that bend 180 degrees to either side has genuinely opened up a new era for leg articulation — and that's not an exaggeration. As you can see in the photos above, it's now possible to pull off wildly dynamic poses that were completely unimaginable with any previous Gunpla. The hip joints are also built in a uniquely free-moving way that lets them bend just about any direction, so when you actually get your hands on it, there's a real satisfaction in being able to position the legs however you want;
Of course, that extreme ground contact ability is limited to ground poses, but since the base articulation is top-tier, posing on a stand is easy too. A kit where even random poses just end up looking dynamic..
The newly introduced GN Sword II looks far more functional than the Exia's, and the GN Drives that now extend to both shoulders have a surprisingly wide range of motion, making them easy to work with. Aside from the yellow stickers on the head feeling a bit out of place, this really is an outstanding kit for the price..
Setting aside the arms, I have to say this is the best kit in over 20 years of Gunpla history when it comes to leg articulation and ground contact. Countless MGs and PGs should be weeping with wounded pride.. (Their egos must be pretty bruised..) Anyway, the situation we have here is that one HG kit released in 2008 has casually dethroned every previous Gunpla in terms of leg articulation and claimed the crown.
I honestly can't figure out what they were thinking, implementing this level of engineering in an HG — it feels almost reckless. It's only going to make developing the 1/100 and MG versions that much harder. But hey, for Gunpla fans, getting the best articulation ever in a kit that costs ¥1000 is definitely not something to complain about ^_^;
Bandai's about to make some serious money...
