The HG Cherudim Gundam has arrived as the third 00 Season 2 kit.
Season 2 is set five years after the end of Season 1, with the story following the veteran heroes of Celestial Being as they reunite once more. The four Gundams from Season 1 all return in upgraded forms. As you can immediately tell from its color scheme and overall look, the Cherudim Gundam is the successor to the sniper unit Dynames Gundam. Although Dynames' pilot Lockon meets a heroic end near the finale of Season 1, his twin brother takes over the controls in Season 2.
(It gives off a real "A Better Tomorrow 2" vibe; the easiest way to bring back a dead main character — turns out they had a twin all along!)
True to its role as an upgraded Dynames, it sports green coloring and comes armed with the new GN Sniper Rifle II and GN Beam Pistol II, with an overall redesigned look. As you can see in the photos above, the color scheme is noticeably darker compared to Dynames, giving it a somewhat heavier, more imposing feel.
One of the biggest changes is that Dynames' distinctive shield has been transformed into something quite unusual on the Cherudim — namely the GN Shield Bits, which function almost like a psycommu weapon. Nine GN Shield Bits in total — five on the tail, one on each knee, and two on the left shoulder — can be combined in various configurations to form different types of shields. The kit includes a separate clear display stand for arranging and showing off the GN Shield Bits, and it's been thoughtfully designed to allow a wide variety of shield shape combinations.
When the HG Exia came out, I was already impressed by the upgrade in HG quality, and then the HG 00 Gundam surprised me all over again. The Season 1 00 HG kits generally showed a noticeable step up in quality compared to SEED HGs, and the HG 00 Gundam pushed that even further. The second Season 2 kit to be released was the GN-X III, but since it was essentially a rehash of the old GN-X, there wasn't much to get excited about quality-wise. The officially second brand-new Season 2 kit is this HG Cherudim Gundam, and just like the HG 00 Gundam, it delivers a quality that easily surpasses the previous HG Dynames.
For starters, the polycaps have been completely replaced with a new type starting from the 00 Season 2 HG kits, and the quality of these polycaps is noticeably better — joint strength is much more solid compared to the HG Dynames. The range of articulation itself is about on par, but with sturdy joints throughout the whole body, poses hold really well once you get them set.
The upgraded GN Sniper Rifle II can be split in half and mounted on the shoulder, though the connection point when folded tends to be a bit weak and can pop apart easily. The GN Beam Pistols have also been upgraded and mount on both sides of the backpack, almost like beam sabers. For reference, the HG Dynames doesn't include GN Beam Pistols — those come with the HG GN Arms D Type. Only the 1/100 Dynames includes GN Beam Pistols. (See the relevant reviews for more details.)
Overall it gives off a similar sense of upgrade as I felt with the HG 00 Gundam, though the insane ankle articulation from the HG 00 isn't carried over here. ^^; That said, the ankle movement on the solid double-joint design is quite unique and fun in its own way. The feet have gotten even smaller, almost giving off a horse-hoof vibe.. Bandai's recent releases have been trending toward smaller and smaller feet, and the Cherudim is no exception — the feet are so tiny they're almost a little sad to look at. (Are all Gundams getting foot-binding treatment??)
Anyway, what the HG Cherudim Gundam makes clear is that the jump in quality from HG SEED to HG 00 Season 1 has taken yet another definitive step forward with Season 2. The HG Dynames was already a pretty solid kit, but the HG Cherudim is a cut above overall. This is a well-crafted kit that has me looking forward to all the upcoming new HG 00 Season 2 releases.
