Gundam Barbataurus

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This is the HG Gundam Barbataurus, the sixth entry in the Gundam Breaker Battlogue series. It's a rare quadruped-type unit in the Gundam universe — and unlike the few spider-legged units we've seen before, this one comes out as a proper centaur-type. For old-school fans, the silhouette might bring to mind the Promaxis from the Aura Battler Dunbine / Kikou-kai Galient series.

As the name suggests, it's based on the HG Gundam Barbatos. An additional Barbatos torso and legs are added to the rear of the existing Barbatos frame — meaning the mid-section connecting the front and rear legs uses an extra Barbatos torso frame. On top of that, a number of armor parts have been changed, giving it a look that's quite different from Barbatos.

Going with the centaur-type design, it uses four sets of Barbatos legs, with the front and rear legs oriented in opposite directions so that both sets only bend inward. The knee articulation range on each leg is pretty standard, but the ankles are flexible enough to allow for some fairly dynamic poses. The original HG Barbatos joints weren't exactly loose, but they weren't super tight either — and with four legs now in play, things feel a bit less stable. It's not quite at the point of being floppy, but if you don't balance it carefully the pose can fall apart. I do wish the joints had been a bit tighter.

Weapons include a long sword, mace, and twin blades. You can combine the twin blades and add effect parts to use them as a bow called the Rouse Dainsleif. The long sword and twin blades can be stored in the rack between the legs, and overall the grip between the hands and weapons is pretty solid.

All in all, this is a kit that shows off a truly unique centaur-type Gundam look — the style alone is enough to turn heads. The joints are a little disappointing in that they're neither loose nor rock-solid, but honestly, just having this thing standing on the shelf is stylish enough on its own. :-)
