Gundam Astray No-Name

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The Gundam Astray No-Name has been released as the 12th HG kit in the Build Divers lineup. Only a portion of the frame runners from the existing HG Astray are reused, with most of the exterior made up of all-new parts — though one beam part is recycled from the HGAW Gundam X.

The highlight of this kit is the No-Name unit, a multi-function armament that can be reconfigured into a total of three different forms through disassembly and reassembly. The three configurations are the cloak-style D-Extension, the large weapon-form B-Smart Gun, and the wing-style X-Connect — each with its own distinct personality.

The base body has an asymmetrical design that gives it more personality than the original Astray, but the added armor pieces get in the way and hold the limb articulation back to a pretty average level. The Astray has always had this image of being the king of articulation, so it's a bit of a shame that the redesign took a step back in that department.

The articulation may be average, but the joint strength is solid enough that posing isn't a problem, and using the three No-Name unit configurations lets you pull off poses that really set it apart from other kits. It does tend to take up a lot of display space, but the visual impact you get for the price is pretty solid. That said, since the armament is quite large, you'll definitely want a separate action base if you plan on displaying it in an action pose.

It's a kit that appeals with solid quality and a strong sense of individuality — if the style clicks with you, it seems like a fun and easy Gunpla to enjoy. :-)
