Kit Review
Straight build + Stickers
Straight build + Stickers
The gunpla from Build Fighters, the new 2013 Gundam anime, got a speedy HG release. At first glance it looks like the kind of show similar to Gunpla Builders, so it hasn't gotten much attention from hardcore Gundam fans — but the surprisingly solid animation quality has drawn a little interest. In the end, the story does feel similar to Gunpla Builders, so the related model kits don't feel like original designs either; the plan is to release kits based on modified versions of existing Gunpla.
Starting with the first release, the HG Build Strike Gundam — while it's technically a modified Strike Gundam in the lore, it doesn't reuse any parts from the existing HG Strike Gundam and is built entirely from new tooling. Thanks to that, the base quality is quite good as you'd expect from a brand-new kit. The articulation is especially impressive, with arms and legs that fold completely, flexible ankle movement, and solid joint strength, all of which make posing a lot of fun. The color separation is also very clean — even the dark gray sections on the Strike's torso that used to be handled with stickers are now all properly separated into individual parts.
On the back is the Build Booster, a combined weapons unit featuring wings and beam cannons, which can be detached from the body and transformed into a flight mode on its own. The Build Booster has an overall feel very similar to the Ootori Pack from the MG Strike Rouge — the way the beam cannons articulate and the transformation process after separation are almost identical.
All in all, this is a clean, hard-to-fault kit for an HG-grade release, and it's definitely worth recommending even if you're not particularly interested in the anime — if you just want a fun Gunpla build, this one delivers. :-)
