Gundam X Maoh

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The third Build Fighters HG release is the Gundam X Maoh. As you can see, it's a kit based on a modified HGAW Gundam X — same base, but roughly 50% of the exterior design has been changed. Thanks to that, about 30% of the parts are new, and it ends up feeling like a noticeably different kit from the Gundam X.

The original Satellite Cannon now has a multi-joint gimmick added in the middle, letting you use it while keeping it fixed to the backpack — and the locking mechanism is solid enough that it actually looks pretty great. The reflectors, which used to mount at a crooked V-shape on the original Gundam X, are now fixed to the backpack in a V-shape and can still spread out into an X just like before. On top of that, a small beam saber has been added to the backpack — something the original Gundam X didn't have — and a small soft-plastic beam part comes along with it.

Since the HGAW Gundam X already had joints as flexible as a ball-jointed figure, this Maoh kit likewise allows for smooth, natural posing, and the joint strength is excellent so everything holds its position well. In terms of quality alone, this kit absolutely holds its own against a proper HGUC-level release.

Build Fighters suits tend to be mostly existing kits with a bunch of weapons piled on, but this Gundam X Maoh feels more like a genuinely new kit with its own redesigned look. It almost feels like a variation that could have appeared in the original Gundam X anime — so much so that it almost seems like a waste to slot it into the Build Fighters lineup. ^^;

Anyway, even if the series background is a bit thin, the quality and design are easily on par with a proper HGUC, making this a highly recommended kit. Even if you're not particularly into Build Fighters or the Gundam X series, if the design catches your eye, it's definitely worth building. :-)
