The 7th kit in the HG Build Fighters lineup, the Sengoku Astray Gundam has been released, based on the new-tooled HG Astray. The body and basic limb framework are the same as the original Astray, but with armor and weapons added to the shoulders and legs, and the head redesigned in a Sengoku-era warrior style.

For starters, the overall silhouette has gotten a bit more beefy, and with 2 samurai swords (the classic Gerbera Straight) stored on top of the shoulders, it cuts quite a striking figure. Since this is a kit that throws out the original lore and does its own thing anyway, looking cool is really all that matters. ^^;

The base kit — the new-tooled HG Astray — is such a gem that the overall articulation and joint strength are excellent. That said, the added armor does narrow the range of motion at the elbows and knees compared to the standard Astray. On the flip side, the new shoulder armor looks really sharp and moves at a wide range of angles thanks to its double-jointed design, which actually makes the poses feel even more dynamic. The shoulder armor in particular is shaped like a giant hand and can even grip the samurai swords, opening up some really unique action poses.

The "Demon Shield" stored on the back looks like a giant talisman, and it feels like a perfect accessory for something called the Sengoku Astray. It's a little disappointing that beyond the two samurai swords and the Demon Shield there aren't really any other weapons, but all in all, with its solid quality and cool styling, this is a pretty decent kit to just sit back and enjoy building without expecting too much. :-)
