Gundam The End

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

Gundam The End has been released as an HG kit in the Build Fighters Try lineup. At first glance, the black cloak gives off strong Death Scythe Hell vibes, but looking more closely, it feels like a mashup of imagery from various Gundams.

First off, Gundam The End has a ton of unique gimmicks in its lore that you won't find on other MS. The black cloak, for instance, can be used in a variety of ways thanks to its multiple joint gimmicks — covering the front, folded back, or spread wide open like wings on both sides. The massive hands on the sides, Fist The End, can be recreated in their deployed form by swapping out the face on the palm and adding soft-material joint sections in the middle. You can also detach and reposition the chest and shoulder armor to recreate the demon-faced body form known as Akumagguy.

Of these, the Fist The End has an articulated middle joint — the four fingers are molded together as one, but cutting them apart with a hobby knife allows for individual movement. That said, the area where the fingers are joined is fairly thick, so you'll want to take your time and work carefully with the cutter. More likely to bother people, though, is the heavy hollowing visible inside the fingers.

Also included is the small MS Ikkaku, which pops out from the hole in the chest to recreate the final battle form. "Ikkaku" means "one horn" in Japanese — it's a small MS that seems to parody (?) a unicorn, and has its own Normal and Destroy modes. In this kit, it comes in Destroy Mode form with the head antenna open and the frame exposed.

The faithful recreation of all these unique gimmicks is definitely one of this kit's strong points, and on top of that, it delivers an impressively high level of articulation across the board. Full limb fold-in is a given, and the wings — poseable at a wide range of angles — let you pull off all kinds of dynamic poses. Joint strength is solid too, so poses hold well no matter what you put it in, though with so many moving joints and gimmicks to deal with, getting everything into a convincing pose does take a bit of time — which is both a plus and a minus.

Either way, the grotesque design and gimmicks will definitely be a love-it-or-hate-it thing, but it's a kit that clearly stands out from other Gunpla in terms of uniqueness. Personally, the creepy vibe is a little off-putting for me, but if it's your kind of thing, this is a wonderfully quirky HG kit that's well worth building for a fun time. :-)
