Winning Fumina has arrived as the third Fumina kit in the Build Fighters HG lineup. Maybe because the previous Super Fumina and Super Fumina Axis Angel Version got so much flak, this one at least comes with all-new molds.
First off, like Chinagguy and Hyper Gyanko, two eye options are available — you can choose to assemble it with a clear parts overlay in front of the eyes, or just leave the eye stickers exposed on the outside. Personally I love the clear parts overlay since it gives the eyes a beautiful, jewel-like look, but since a lot of people complained about it, they've now included a plain eye option as well.
For the body, a shared runner format labeled "BFG" is used — presumably short for Build Fighters Girl. Of the two BFG runners, one is a reuse from Chinagguy, while the rest are all new runners.
The defining feature of Winning Fumina is that you can remove all the armor pieces from the body to create an armor-off state, and then reassemble those pieces into an SD Gundam-style Super Deluxe Winning Gundam. The process of breaking down and reassembling the armor is fairly involved, so you'll want to follow the manual carefully — but the fragmented armor pieces do come together in a surprisingly convincing way. That said, because so much attention went into the parts connections, there's almost no articulation; even the neck and waist don't rotate, leaving you with little more than arm-raising poses.
As for the overall look, despite being a new mold the face is barely any different from before. The body, however, is more fully form-fitting, which gives it a more feminine appearance. It at least feels like a visual step up from the previous Super Fuminas.
The previous Super Fumina series was nearly impossible to stand upright due to terrible joint strength and way-too-small feet, but Winning Fumina has at least been improved enough to stand on its own to some degree. The joints still don't feel particularly sturdy though — a dedicated stand is included, but honestly I'd rather the body itself were more solid..
The strangest part is the hands. The wrist socket is deep, but the ball joint on the wrist is so short that it barely holds at all. You can sort of rest the hand in place, but the moment you put a weapon in it, the hand just falls off. It's a genuinely baffling design blunder, and lately it feels like more and more kits are slipping through with this kind of quality control issue that you just wouldn't expect from Bandai..
Beyond that, the body's articulation is decent enough — but the front skirt completely blocks the hip joints, making it hard to extend the legs forward, and the armor sitting alongside the arms makes moving them awkward. Parts also tend to fall off here and there while posing, so all in all it's not the most posing-friendly kit.
In the end, it's an improvement, but the quality still feels a bit iffy. That said, the basic proportions and durability are clearly better than the previous Super Fuminas, which does offset some of the shortcomings. Either way, if you're a Fumina fan who was let down by the Super Fumina, this one should at least give you a little comfort. :-)
