There are some color differences, but the old kit from 20 years ago had pretty decent proportions in its own right.

This is the HGUC Gouf Flight Type, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's based on the HGUC Gouf Custom with changes to the shoulders, torso, legs, backpack, and more — roughly 70% of the kit features new tooling.
As you'd expect from an HGUC kit, it pulls off the excellent color separation and chunky proportions really well. The thicker legs do take a toll on leg articulation, but since this kit wins on sheer volume and bulk, that's somewhat offset. The Gouf Custom's Gatling shield carries over as-is for the armament, and the binders on the back and side skirts do have some range of movement. The basic joint skeleton follows the HGUC Gouf Custom directly — and while the lower body is considerably bulkier, the joint strength is still plenty stable.
The original 1/144 HG Gouf Flight Type from 1998 was actually a pretty impressive kit for its time. Even compared to the HGUC that came out 20 years later, it holds up surprisingly well in terms of sculpt and volume. Of course, the HGUC does offer more refined color separation, sharper edges, and more reliable joint strength. Either way, this is a kit that would've been more than worthy of a general retail release — so it's a relief that it at least got a clean release through Club G. :-)
