This kit is the HGUC Regelgu, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's been 32 years since the original 1/144 kit came out back in 1986, and now it's finally here as an HGUC. True to its design origins, it's based on the HGUC Gelgoog, with a good number of new parts added for the shoulders, backpack, weapons, and more.
The highlight of the Regelgu is those oversized shoulder armor pieces — the size, volume, and interior detail all come out cleanly at HGUC quality. The distinctive backpack is also well done in both sculpt and functionality, with the missile hatch open gimmick and the beam lancer storage on the underside both nicely realized. On top of that, a dedicated beam rifle and two beam lancers are included as weapons, and the two lancers can be connected together for use. The forearm armor's grenade launcher can also be opened up.
The basic frame itself is identical to the HGUC Gelgoog, and being a 2006-era platform, the articulation is pretty average. That said, the joints are still nice and solid, so you can pull off stable poses even with those big shoulder armor pieces.
Either way, there must be plenty of old-school fans who've been waiting a long time for an HGUC Regelgu. It may have come out as a Club G exclusive rather than a general release, but this is a kit that'll genuinely move you — the legend of those massive shoulder pads has finally been properly immortalized in plastic. :-)
