Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Custom] Expansion Parts for Gundam TR-6

Kit Review

Straight build + stickers/waterslide decals

This kit is the HGUC Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Custom] Expansion Parts for Gundam TR-6, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's essentially a repackaging of the HGUC Hazel Kai (Custom) that came out back in 2005. The runner lineup for the main body is completely identical — only the gray D runner, which makes up the joints, has been changed from ABS to KPS.

As you probably know, ABS is durable but has a hard, smooth surface that isn't great for painting. The switch to KPS is meant to improve paint-friendliness, but if you're just doing a straight build, you probably won't notice much of a difference either way. About the only thing you'd notice with KPS being a regular plastic is that cleaning up the gates is slightly smoother than with ABS.

And instead of the seals that came with the original standard release, this limited edition includes waterslide decals. They're a bit of a hassle to apply, but honestly the end result looks so much cleaner. The seals in the original standard release had way too much blank space around the edges, which made things look a little messy. Anyway, while the joint material and decals have changed, the kit's contents and features are 100% identical to the standard release. So I could just throw up a quick front shot and tell you to check the existing HGUC Hazel Kai standard release reviewfor the rest — and that would be a perfectly valid thing to do.

But the thing is, that HGUC Hazel Kai standard release review was made back in 2005 when the kit first came out, which means as of 2021 it's a whopping 16 years old. The camera and lighting back then weren't nearly as good as what I have now, so the image quality and photo sizes are pretty rough by today's standards. So I went ahead and re-shot everything as if I were reviewing a brand new kit. ^^

The Hazel Custom is still a clean, high-quality HGUC kit — a true masterpiece that punches above its size with excellent color separation, sculpting, and detail. It's a pretty, clean kit you never get tired of building no matter how many times you put it together. The real bonus exclusive to Club G is the addition of expansion parts runners for the Gundam TR-6 — the Woundwort lineage. You get one set each of joint parts for connecting the Gaplant and Hi-Zack arms, Xekueins arms, Hazel legs, and Marasai legs, plus additional joint parts with 4.5mm holes that can connect to just about any polycap ball joint.

In the AOZ setting, there are all kinds of variations built around the Gundam TR-6 Woundwort as the base unit — the most notable being the Gaplant II and Hi-Zack II, and these expansion parts are ultimately meant for building those machines. That said, the Hi-Zack II requires you to grab HGUC kits like the Hi-Zack, Marasai, and Xekueins — which have completely different design colors — and play Lego with them. In a straight build state the color combination looks totally off, so painting is pretty much mandatory if you want a proper result.

Still, the Gaplant II — assembled from six different AOZ kits — actually pulls off a reasonably close approximation of its design colors and looks pretty impressive... but the Woundwort's small body joints just can't handle the MG-scale bulk that comes with it. T_T The joints might have been just fine supporting the tiny, slender Woundwort body on its own, but once you add all those big limbs, the waist wobbles and the hip joints feel sketchy. With some careful tweaking you can get it to stand upright and hold poses, but don't go in expecting great durability out of the combined form. The Hi-Zack II fares a bit better than the Gaplant II, but it's still not what I'd call stable — and the configuration that only swaps in the Xekueins arms is relatively the least worrying of the bunch.

To wrap it up: the Hazel Custom itself is still excellent, but if you're not planning to do the Woundwort-based Lego swapping, there's really no reason to hunt down the Club G limited edition. If your goal is just to build the Hazel Custom, the regular release is easy enough to find and cheap enough that it'll do the job just fine. This one's really for folks who want to try building the Gaplant II or Hi-Zack II with the expansion parts. :-)
