PHANTOM LIGHT
TRANSFORMATION
This kit is the HGUC Phantom Gundam, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's the unit from Mobile Suit Gundam Crossbone Gundam Ghost, and it's an entirely new kit design. Some joint parts and weapons reuse runners from the HGUC Crossbone series, but about 95% of it is made up of new parts.
The look is a new design, but the underlying frame is similar to the HGUC Crossbone Gundam, so it still delivers excellent articulation and joint strength. There's none of that typical HG polycap shoulder-popping issue, and the overall tight joints mean poses hold really well. For weapons, you get the Butterfly Buster B reused from the HGUC Crossbone Gundam X-0 Full Cloth, along with a heat knife, and beam parts for using the Butterfly Buster B in sword mode are included too. The heat knife is canonically stored in the side skirt, but in this kit, you just detach one side skirt part and plug it onto a separate heat knife piece.
The biggest highlight of this kit is the large number of Phantom Light effect parts, which can be attached to the head, chest, skirt, shoulders, forearms, knees, calves, backpack, and more. They all hold on solidly, so you can pose without much hassle, and the result is a really flashy, dynamic display. There are also two types of flame effect parts included that plug into the heat knife to turn it into a flame sword.
The transformation into Mirage Wazzo (Mirage Bird) is done through parts-swapping, with only the torso using a separate set of transformation parts. Since it's a swap-style transformation, it's not particularly difficult, and the transformed form holds together well. The shape is pretty elongated sideways, so it's not exactly the sleekest-looking thing, but it does have a uniquely quirky charm to it.
Overall, this is a high-quality HGUC kit with a high level of polish — and above all, the Phantom Light activated state with all those effect parts is just incredibly appealing. It really gives off that "coolness overload" vibe. It probably would've been even more popular if it had gotten a wide retail release, and personally, it's satisfying enough to easily rank in my all-time top 5 HG kits. Either way, if you're into flashy, eye-catching kits, this is absolutely one you don't want to miss. :-)
