Club G HGUC

Engage Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the HGUC Engage Gundam, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's the mobile suit that appears in the simulation app "Mobile Suit Gundam U.C. Engage." Just going by the name, you might think it's a variation of the Club G HGUC Gundam Development Test Unit 0
(Engage Zero)
— but it's actually a 100% newly tooled kit with a completely different design.

That said, since they share the same background setting, the basic design concept is very similar to the Gundam Development Test Unit 0 (Engage Zero). At first glance it almost looks like a hybrid of the Gundam GP01 with a G-Defenser slapped on, but look closer and it's a completely new design with its own details. The biggest highlight is that it comes with a backpack that feels like a simplified take on the G-Defenser, plus a long rifle — letting you build a Super Engage Gundam that's essentially the Engage Gundam's answer to the Super Gundam (Gundam Mk-II + G-Defenser combo). The simplified design also means the gimmicks are more straightforward, making it a lot easier to handle compared to the original G-Defenser.

The Engage Gundam itself uses modern engineering to deliver decent articulation and joint strength — though it's not quite an A-tier action figure-style kit with exceptional poseability and perfectly tuned joints. The articulation is a bit disappointing for a modern kit, and while some polycaps are used, most joints are polycap-less, so the movement doesn't feel all that smooth. On the flip side, the base proportions and stability are quite good.

The Super Engage Gundam configuration also holds together really well, and the long-barrel long rifle connects to the hand securely. Compared to the HGUC Super Gundam, which was always a bit nerve-wracking to pose, the stability here is noticeably better. As a bonus gimmick, you can also attach the additional Booster from the HGUC Gundam Development Test Unit 0 (Engage Zero) — you'll need to use the included joint parts to do so.

All in all, being a 100% newly tooled kit makes this a pretty appealing Club G release. Aside from the joints being a little stiff and the articulation falling slightly short, there's not much to complain about. If you like the look of it or you're after a brand-new sculpt, this is definitely a kit worth picking up and having fun with. :-)
