Club G HG

Gundam Naion

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the HG Gundam Naion, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. Like the HG Gundam Lfrith Jiureleased through Club G, this is a unit from the spin-off manga "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury — Vanadis Heart," serialized in Monthly Gundam Ace. It's a relatively large unit with a flashy arsenal.

First off, the overall sculpt looks great and the color separation is well done, giving it an impressive straight build appearance. Articulation is about average, but the joints are generally solid without being overly stiff. For weapons, you get the Alterable Bayonetta — which can have beam parts plugged in — and a beam saber. The backpack is equipped with the large beam cannon "Vajra," which in turn carries three gun-bits "Rinkou" on each side that can rotate and detach.

Thanks to the gorgeous mobile suit design and varied arsenal, you can pull off all kinds of flashy poses. That said, the sub-arm section that connects and holds the Vajra is a bit disappointing. The sub-arm's range of movement is more limited than you'd expect, making it harder than anticipated to grab the Vajra by hand — the angles you can hold it at are restricted, so positioning it in different directions is a challenge.

Even more of a problem is that both sides of the Vajra's sub-arm use C-type joints. They're not sturdy or secure enough to support the large Vajra, and the joints tend to pop off easily during posing. They also don't hold well when the Vajra is deployed or even when standing it upright — it spreads apart on you, which is honestly infuriating. Given the nature of C-type joints, there's also a real concern about breakage or the joint spreading open over time. Once it starts to spread, it gets severely loose and the holding power basically drops to zero.

Of course, since there are no polycaps, C-type joints do have their uses — they make it easier to disassemble joints for painting. That's fine for the knees and ankles, but using them to support a large weapon like this just doesn't seem right. (The knee C-type joints even pop off occasionally during posing, for what it's worth.) I've noticed C-type joints showing up a lot in the Witch from Mercury HG lineup and haven't made a big deal of it until now, but the backpack section on this kit is something I just can't let slide without saying something.

So while the look and style are fantastic, the C-type joint issues leave a pretty sour aftertaste. Aside from that, it's actually a decent kit — as long as you go in knowing what to watch out for, I think it's definitely worth giving a shot. :-)
