This kit is the HG Graham's Union Flag Custom II (GN Flag), released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. In terms of lore, it's based on the HG Union Flag Custom Graham's Unitreleased in the 00 series back in 2007, but in reality it's been released as a completely new sculpt. As the final boss mobile suit of the first season of the 00 anime, this is a kit that a lot of fans have been waiting for.
The overall silhouette looks similar to the 2007 version, but look closely and you'll notice the proportions and design are quite different. Being a brand-new sculpt, everything from the parts layout to the joint structure is completely different. For starters, it uses ring-style joints without polycaps, with directional joint pins applied throughout. Thanks to this, most joints are well-designed to stay in place during posing — however, the hip joint does have a tendency to pop out occasionally when raising the thigh upward.
This happens because the hip joint is made up of two stages — a rotation section and a ball joint — and the rotation section is too stiff compared to the ball joint where the thigh actually connects. That said, the ball joint itself is absolutely not loose; it's just that the joint strength balance is a little off. Other than that, the overall joint strength is very solid, moving smoothly while holding poses firmly. The general articulation is excellent as well, and there's even a gimmick where you can pull the shoulder joint outward to expand its range of motion.
Weapons include a linear rifle, GN beam saber, and plasma sword. The lead wire for the GN beam saber can be used in two different lengths, and the gimmick of moving the pseudo solar furnace from the back and mounting it behind the shoulder is also recreated. There's also a gimmick where you can pull the head goggles open to both sides — though the process is a little awkward, and the orange sticker on the goggles does look a bit out of place.
So here we have a 00 HG with a brand-new sculpt after quite a long time. Overall it delivers solid joints and excellent articulation, though the hip joint and the stickers do leave a little to be desired. Still, it's a well-done upgrade to the GN Flag after 18 years, so for those who've been waiting a long time for this kit, it should make for a great treat. :-)
