Gundam TR-1 [Hazel 2] Early Type /Hazel Spare Type/GM Quel

Kit Review

Straight build + stickers/waterslide decals

This is the Gundam TR-1 [Hazel 2] Early Type / Hazel Spare Type / GM Quel, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. The base configuration is the Hazel 2 Early Type, but by swapping parts you can also build the Hazel Spare Type and GM Quel. The skeleton reuses the MG Hazel's frame as-is, with only the knee and ankle guard frames changed to accommodate the revised exterior. So the basic articulation and joint characteristics are identical to the MG Hazel — which means the MG Gundam Mk-II v2.0 frame has been recycled yet again.

In the lore, the Hazel was originally built using the GM Quel as its base, and the Hazel Spare Type is essentially that with just the head swapped out for a Gundam-style head. In this kit, not only the head but also the neck parts are replaced to match the color scheme. Then, when a sub-actuator is added on top of the torso, the Tri-Booster backpack is attached, and a new head is applied, it becomes the Hazel 2. The forearm color combination also changes to blue + white, and the kit is carefully designed to reflect all of this — check out the review photos for a closer look at the differences.

Since the underlying frame was already excellent quality, this kit delivers solid articulation and sturdy joint strength as expected. It's a bit slimmer than the Hazel, which helps with stability, but the Hazel 2's Tri-Booster on the back is so large that the center of gravity shifts rearward. You can lower the Long Booster in the middle of the Tri-Booster to use it as a support stand — without doing that, the upper body tilts back and the belly pokes out. It's kind of an unavoidable structural issue, but all the other joints feel plenty solid.

The newly added Tri-Booster turned out nice and large, though it feels like a straight upscale of the HGUC version without much additional detail work. That said, the articulation on each of the verniers is faithfully implemented, and the sheer size of it gives it a strong presence. On the weapons side, a GM Rifle has been newly added to the existing Hazel armaments, and features like the shoulder sub-actuator articulation and the beam rifle mounting on the side skirt are carried over from the Hazel unchanged.

All in all, this is a clean, quality kit that can be configured into three different forms — if you're collecting AOZ kits in MG scale, this is definitely one you won't want to miss. :-)
