Weapon Set for RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Weapon Set for RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. As the name suggests, it's an accessory kit for the RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0released as a standard retail release, and it comes with the following weapons/accessories.

1. Gundam Hammer / Hyper Hammer
This is the star weapon of the kit — one chain that lets you swap between the Gundam Hammer and Hyper Hammer. I think this might be the first time the Hyper Hammer has ever been made in plastic kit form. And above all, the chain parts molded with an incredibly complex system are just stunning. When I first saw it, I honestly wondered if it really needed to be this complicated. It wouldn't have been bad to just include a pre-assembled chain like the MG..?

But once I actually built it, the reason became immediately clear. The MG chain was just simply linked together — it was floppy and just drooped, with zero ability to hold a position. This RG chain, on the other hand, is molded all in one piece via system insert, with each link articulated, so it can actually be fixed at specific angles. Sure, you need the stand's help for a clean and stable hold, but as you can see in the review photos above, if you get the angle just right, it can hold its shape independently to a decent degree. The fact that a Gundam Hammer chain can be locked in place link by link — that's genuinely impressive to me personally.

That said, there are so many gate connection points that cleaning up the gate marks is a bit of a grind. If you fully detach the chain from the runner before cleaning up the gates, the small individual links won't stay put and it'll likely be a hassle to work with. But if you look closely, the chain parts are held to the runner link by link with clear fixing pins, so even after you clip all the gates with nippers, the chain stays attached to the runner. The idea is to clip the gates first, then detach each link from the clear fixing pins one by one. So I cleaned up the gates while the links were still lined up on the clear fixing pins, and that was way more convenient. To do this, though, you'll need to pre-cut the runner rods leading up to the black gates with nippers — refer to the explanation in the review photos above.

2. Beam Jabelin
It's a new sculpt and came out really nicely — in terms of length, it doesn't feel that much smaller than the MG version. And true to RG form, the detail on each section feels more refined than the MG. (Which also means more panel lining work.. ahem)

3. Super Napalm
It's a weapon that attaches to the underside of the existing beam rifle, and the warhead section has color separation in red. The fit with the beam rifle is more than solid.

4. Bazooka
It's on a new runner, but the sculpt itself is the same as the one included with the existing RG Gundam Ver.2.0. You can use this to pull off a double bazooka pose.

5. Curved Beam Saber Effect Parts
These should come in handy for recreating dynamic scenes. Personally, I've tried bending a straight beam saber by force for scenes like this before — now I can just use these parts instead.

6. Clear Stand
It's a stand that's been included with various other kits before, but it's the 1/144-scale version with the best durability. I personally like it because the support arm holds firmly, and it also comes with a dedicated joint part for securing the Gundam Hammer. And of course, it can also be used to display the RG Gundam Ver.2.0 itself.

So all in all, this kit comes with 6 types of weapons/accessories as listed above, and overall it feels like a high-quality set that pairs well with the RG Gundam Ver.2.0. The Gundam Hammer chain that can actually hold its own shape is worth the purchase price on its own. The included clear stand is also great quality and super versatile, so this is an accessory kit I'd recommend on multiple fronts. :-)
