Votoms 1/20

ATM-09-GC Brutishdog

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

Following the 1/20 Scopedog, the Brutishdog has been released.
The Brutishdog is a female pilot's AT with a purple-toned color scheme.
There are three main differences from the Scopedog:

1. The right arm is replaced with a Gatling gun.
2. A backpack is added.
3. Large wheels are added to the rear of the feet.

Those are the key differences.

Everything else — articulation, detail, frame, you name it — is identical, and additionally (of course) the pilot and standing figure have been changed from Kiriko to Fiana. Since about 90% of this kit is the same as the Scopedog, for a more detailed look at the gimmicks, frame, and so on, please refer to the 1/20 Scopedog reviewfor more details.

The Brutishdog drops the Scopedog's rifle in favor of a backpack and Gatling arm, and the Gatling's design and proportions are pretty solid. Rifling is engraved inside the barrel, and the claw section is articulated. The Gatling's magazine can also be mounted on the backpack.

The Gatling itself is fine, but the magazine that plugs into it tends to be a bit loose and falls out easily. More of an issue, though, is that the backpack attachment is really weak — barely touch it and it pops right off. It feels less like it's clipped in and more like it's just resting there. I wish they'd paid a bit more attention to securing the backpack, because as it stands it barely holds on at all.

The wheels added to the heels make quite a strong impression, but they seem to hurt the feet's grip on the ground a little. The ankle joints feel like they've gotten weaker because of it, and if you're not careful the kit can topple forward or backward. That said, it's not completely loose, so as long as you don't push the center of gravity too far off, you should be fine.

Even though it's a female pilot's unit with a feminine color scheme, the Gatling gun gives it a whole lot more punch. (Gatling guns are supposed to be a guy's dream, after all...;;;) Losing the rifle does limit the variety of action poses a bit, but the Gatling gun more than makes up for it.

Just a heads-up — removing the armor on 1/20 Votoms kits is a real chore. It's tough to get off in the first place, and as you're pulling it away, wet decals start falling off left and right.. T_T.. The decals below the knee are especially brutal. I'd recommend not taking the armor off too often, and if you can, apply a topcoat over the decals beforehand.

Just as the Scopedog was a high-quality kit, the Brutishdog is equally impressive. The unique color scheme and Gatling gun give the Brutishdog even more shelf appeal. To be precise, it looks even better displayed alongside the Scopedog. Bandai probably chose the Votoms kits partly because they're easy to reuse tooling on, but at this level of quality, I'd be more than happy to see every version get a release. ^_^
