Dunbine Set 2

Kit Review

Straight build

Dunbine Set 2, a repackage of old-school Dunbine kits, has been released as a Premium Bandai online exclusive. Just like the previously released Dunbine Set 1, this is a repackage collecting old-school 1/72 Dunbine kits. The set includes four kits: Zwarth, Leprechaun, Drumlo, and Virunvee.

Being from 1983, these are practically antiques even among old-school kits. As a result, they feel a step more dated than even the old-school Dragonar/L-Gaim kits. As you'd expect from vintage kits, assembly is 100% glue-required, and in terms of joint articulation, gimmicks, and sculpting, you really get a taste of that rough-around-the-edges charm of early model kits. Not only is the articulation lacking, but joint strength varies wildly from part to part — you can really feel the limits of model kit technology back in the day.

In particular, Dunbine kits tend to use a lot of lead wires, which are fiddly to assemble and don't really look all that great either. Still, back in the day they were probably considered a premium feature combining different materials. One thing to note — most kits in the series have four poseable wings, and the wings can be quite stiff to attach. If you're not careful, they can break or end up loose, so definitely take extra care there.

Being such a vintage kit among vintage kits, it's hard to recommend outright. If this is your first time building an old-school kit, it might come as quite a shock — but for longtime Dunbine fans of old, having it reissued in any form at all is probably something to be grateful for. :-)
