There are a handful of truly bizarre releases in the history of Bandai Gunpla, and I'd say this EX Gunperry is one of them. Sure, the Gunperry itself appeared in the Gundam anime multiple times and isn't exactly an obscure item — but the thing is, it was released in 1/144 scale so that actual 1/144-scale Gundam kits can be stored inside it.
A lot of you are probably looking at the photos and going "wait, it's THAT big??" — but trust me, the photos don't do it justice. Seeing it in person, it's so bewilderingly large that you start wondering if a Gunpla like this was really ever made ^^;
Despite its size, the parts breakdown is surprisingly simple, so assembly goes by quickly — but because all the focus went into the sheer size, the external detail is just... okay. The panel lines aren't deep, and the molding isn't particularly refined. It's purely all about size! The biggest appeal of this kit is definitely the fun of loading HGUC-scale MS inside. It also seems like it'd be great for dioramas, but honestly, the joy of stuffing different things in and playing around with it is... ^^;;
The color separation is decent enough, but if you want to match the actual design colors, there are quite a few painting points. On the plus side, the large flat surfaces make masking easy, and it seems like it'd actually be a fun kit to paint. Sticker seals with the Earth Federation Forces markings are included, but since I'm hoping to paint it properly someday, I didn't apply them for the review. (When will that day come???)
The box is huge, the kit itself is huge, and at ¥6,500 the price is more than double that of other EX series kits — but when you consider that overwhelming sense of scale and sheer uniqueness, I think it's worth it in its own bizarre way. Whatever you want to say about it, it's clearly one of the most standout entries in the already unique EX series lineup, and it's a genuinely fun item :-)
