Super Sylf Yukikaze

Kit Review

Straight build

The EX series brings minor subjects that seem tricky to do in plastic to life with decent detail — and now the Super Sylf Yukikaze from Yukikaze: Fairy War has joined the lineup.

Overall it's a clean aircraft kit that captures the futuristic fighter jet vibe nicely, and Bandai's signature snap-fit system is well applied here. The detail doesn't match a precision aircraft kit in the Hasegawa mold, but the fact that everything — from the landing gear to the missile attachments — can be assembled without glue is a genuine plus. The cockpit detail, which tends to be the benchmark for quality in aircraft kits, isn't anything to get too excited about.. but it's acceptable enough.

The landing gear is removable as standard, and the opening gimmick for the reconnaissance pod is also reproduced, so it's fairly faithful when it comes to basic feature implementation. There are plenty of panel lines, but as you'd expect from an aircraft kit(?), they're on the shallow side — worth keeping in mind.

As a Bandai SF aircraft kit, it delivers reasonably solid buildability and quality. The EX kit's characteristically steep price is a bit of an issue, but the fact that Yukikaze got an injection-molded release is pretty significant in itself. For reference, this is the early version 1.0 — a slightly upgraded version 1.5 was released later. If you're going to build one, the 1.5 version with improved detail is the better pick, even if it costs a little more. ^_^;
