MP-02A Oggo

Kit Review

Straight build + decals

Following the EX Hildolfr, it seems like the Bandai team got inspired or something — they went ahead and released the Oggo right after. This makes it the second EX kit and, counting the HGUC Juaggu, the third MS IGLOO original unit to get a kit. Of course, the EX line does have IGLOO-version kits of things like the Musai, Salamis, and Magellan, but those were refined versions rather than originals.

The Oggo, as you may know, is the ill-fated unit that Zeon strapped young boys into and sent off to die gloriously at the end of the war... Honestly, compared to the Hildolfr it's got a lot less charisma, so I never expected it to get a kit; The design isn't exactly what you'd call attractive either — it's kind of like a Zeon version of the Ball, in a way. (It actually fights the Ball in the show, too.)

That said, the general consensus from people who've actually built the EX Oggo seems to be: "Wait, huh? It actually looks pretty cute once it's done~" Since it's not a unit that sets your expectations sky-high to begin with, that probably helps — but honestly, when you build it yourself, it really is more charming and cute than you'd expect. Even with that raw poop-brown molded color, the detail is decent and the overall sculpt isn't bad at all. And like the Hildolfr before it, the color separation is solid enough that the straight build alone gives you a pretty good result — it's one of the rare EX models where that's actually the case.

Since this is an EX model that lives and dies by its proportions, it's clear they put a lot of thought into how it would look as a finished 3D object. Of course, because of those precious proportions, the claw arm section — which on any normal kit would've been more than easy enough to make articulated — is completely fixed and doesn't move at all. The arms are totally locked in place even though the size and structure would've been perfectly fine for folding and extending T_T (Oh, the claw toes do articulate, at least.) So anyway, the lower claw structure is handled by swapping between a folded form and an extended form.

Beyond that, just like in the source material, you can mount a Zaku machine gun or bazooka on the upper right, and the Sturm Faust and rocket pods are removable — true to EX model form, it faithfully recreates the basic setup. The stand in particular is a highlight for me: it looks great and the detail is solid. The 3-step height adjustment is a nice touch too. Worth noting that the stands are designed to connect front-to-back in a chain, so you can display multiple Oggos in a row. (Wait, so they're basically telling us to buy more than one!!)

One thing though... the EX Oggo has an unusually large number of tiny decals, and the adhesion isn't great either, so applying them was quite a struggle. It felt like it took more than twice as long as the actual assembly. Applying the Hildolfr's decals was kind of fun, but the Oggo's decal work had me even more on edge than slapping on those infamous Katoki Hajime-style MG dry decals. -_-

Anyway, if you haven't seen IGLOO, this honestly isn't a unit that's going to grab you, and even if you have seen it, the design might not be your cup of tea... but the kit itself is nice. More than you'd expect. :-)
