Batmobile : Batman Forever version

Kit Review

Straight build

The third EX Advanced Series release is the Batmobile from Batman Forever. It may be the biggest box office flop of the Batman films, but the Batmobile that appeared in it was pretty stylish.

The detail level is similar to the previously released Batman version, but the sharpness of the detail feels somehow a notch below. On the other hand, unlike the Begins version, the cockpit interior and underside are nicely rendered. Overall though, being the third Batmobile release, it gives the most polished and stable feel quality-wise.

Most notably, one of the issues with the Batman version — the finicky cockpit hatch opening mechanism — has been completely sorted out in the Forever version. It opens easily and closes easily. Just that alone gives you the sense that they've genuinely refined and improved things.

The Forever version Batmobile is ¥4,500, which is ¥1,000 more than the other versions (pricey as expected for EX!), and that's all because of the LED lighting feature. Using 3 LR43 batteries, you can switch a single blue LED on and off — and that one LED light source is cleverly used to illuminate the entire front section of the body. The combination of chrome parts and clear parts in particular is just brilliant, and the dazzling effect with the lights on is genuinely stunning.

There have been plenty of kits with LED lighting before, but in terms of sheer visual impact, this might just be the best of any Bandai kit to date. The Lightning Edition Freedom was great, and the HY2M series were great too — but pulling off this kind of spectacular lighting effect with just a single LED is honestly amazing. How they managed to create such a mesmerizing interplay of light with just one LED and a handful of clear and chrome parts is beyond me...

The kit itself is a solid EX line release, but that lighting feature alone makes it something really special. Even if you're not a fan of Batman Forever, this is a unique enough kit that it's well worth picking up. Sure, it was a limited production run so availability is a bit of a headache — but either way, I think it deserves to be called a landmark kit. ^^
