Following the Begins version, Tim Burton's original Batman version Batmobile has now been released as an EX kit. By design it's slimmer, longer, and blacker than the Begins version, which really gives it that authentic original Batmobile feel.
First off, unlike the Begins version, the molded color comes out a proper black, so even as a straight build you get that matte-like weight and presence unique to the Batmobile. And crucially, the detail that was so disappointing on the Begins version has been massively improved. For starters, unlike the Begins version, the cockpit's instrument panels and steering wheel are properly represented, and the underside detail has become as refined as an auto model kit.
And it doesn't stop at just building it — optional features like the front turbine, side claws, cockpit hatch opening, and machine gun attachment/detachment are all pretty well reproduced. That said, the cockpit hatch does have a bit of an issue — once you close it, it's really hard to get back open;; You're supposed to lift the hatch cover up and then slide it forward to open it, but it just won't lift up;; So I actually had to disassemble the body, pop the lid off, and push it open from underneath. It's hard not to see this as some kind of design oversight...
Overall it feels like a solid, well-rounded EX-grade kit, and it reminds me a lot of a Tamiya auto model. It still feels a bit pricey for what you get, as is typical of the EX Model line, but hey — it's the Batmobile, so all is forgiven. ^^;
If you're a fan of Tim Burton's original Batman or just a Batman fan in general, this is a kit you can build without any major complaints. :-)
