Following the MG Figure-rise series at 20cm+, there was a lineup called Figure-rise 6 that fell into the HG-class figure category. Then in 2016, a brand new lineup launched under the name Figure-rise Standard. As you can tell just from the comparison photos above, the size, contents, and concept are all similar to Figure-rise 6 — but it looks like they started a new lineup to diversify the character roster.
The very first release in this Figure-rise Standard lineup is the Strike Interceptor from the anime <Active Raid - Mobile Assault Division, Unit 8>. It's the powered armor known as "Willwear" that the police protagonist suits up in like an Iron Man suit, and it looks like it was released to coincide with the Season 2 broadcast starting in July 2016.
First of all, as the debut product of a new lineup, the overall quality feels like a slight step up from Figure-rise 6. The approach of layering armor over a full-body inner frame is clean, the articulation is top-notch, and the joint strength is solid — as a poseable action figure, there's really nothing to complain about. With kits like this, pure mechanical articulation and joint strength matter, of course, but above all, the "feel in your hands" is what really counts. In that regard, it's more stable and has a better feel to it than Figure-rise 6.
Accessories include the police badge wallet in both folded and open forms along with dedicated hand parts for holding it, plus a detachable flight unit. That said, the flight unit wings could easily have been made articulated — having to detach and reattach them just to swap between forms is a bit of a hassle and feels like a missed opportunity. On the plus side, the clear simple stand that used to come with old BB Senshi kits is included, so you can display it on its own without needing a separate stand.
If you're a fan of the Active Raid anime, this is definitely a kit worth recommending — but since it's a lineup that relies heavily on character appeal, it's a bit hard to suggest to people who aren't familiar with the mech. On top of that, the price feels like it crept up a bit with the move to Figure-rise Standard: compared to Figure-rise 6 which was in the ¥1800–2000 range, the ¥2500 price tag on Figure-rise Standard might feel a little steep.
Anyway, the quality as a poseable action figure is definitely top-tier, and it's the kind of product that makes you even more excited for the famous character series like Dragon Ball that'll be coming down the line. :-)
