Figurerise Standard

Super Saiyan Son Gokou

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

The second kit in the Figure-rise Standard lineup for 2016 is none other than Super Saiyan Son Gokou from Dragon Ball. Compared to the previous Strike Interceptor, this is a far more mainstream character with massive brand power. There was actually a larger release back in 2010 as part of the MG Figure-rise series as well.

Unlike the MG Figure-rise version, this Figure-rise Standard Super Saiyan Son Gokou shows him in his complete costume before his top gets torn up. The size is smaller, but the overall facial expression and proportions actually feel like an upgrade over the MG Figure-rise.

In particular, the eyes and eyebrows are achieved through color separation instead of seals — it gives off a Figure-rise Burst vibe, and the result is a noticeably cleaner finish that's on a whole different level from seals. You also get 2 facial expressions that can be swapped in and out, and the open-mouth face pairs perfectly with the Kamehameha pose.

True to the latest Figure-rise lineup, it delivers excellent sculpting along with outstanding articulation, and with solid joint strength on top of that, it just feels really satisfying to pose. Despite not having a huge number of articulation points, you can pull off quite a variety of poses, and with the swappable hands you can create all sorts of attack poses. That said, the arms feel relatively short, which leaves a subtle sense of disappointment when posing..

And of course you can't talk about Son Gokou without the Kamehameha — to recreate it, you get two effect parts representing before and after firing. There's also a clear support stand for holding up the Kamehameha effect, plus a T-back style joint part for connecting to a separate stand. The included support isn't really meant to hold up the figure itself — it's just enough to prop up the Kamehameha effect parts.

All in all, this is a kit that's an upgrade over the MG Figure-rise from six years ago in every way — sculpting, articulation, and proportions. The only gripe is that ¥2500 feels a little pricey for the size, but aside from that it's a fantastic action figure model kit. It's well worth recommending to anyone with a soft spot for Dragon Ball, and I have a feeling these Dragon Ball characters are going to be a powerful driving force in reviving the Figure-rise series. :-)
