Figurerise Standard

Kaiju No.8

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is Kaiju No.8 released as part of the Figure-rise Standard series. It's a character from the hugely popular manga and anime "Kaiju No.8" — similar to Attack on Titan, the main character transforms into a kaiju. It's also a bit larger than your typical Figure-rise Standard kit.

The overall skeletal structure feels a little different from existing Figure-rise Standard kits. The entire shoulder armor on the sides of the torso swings forward and backward, and the waist features a two-stage range of motion that's quite impressive. That said, if you push the waist bend too hard, the internal ball joint tends to pop out. The waist joint itself also feels a bit stiff, so getting a nice fluid bent-waist pose is harder than you'd expect. The shoulder joints are a touch stiff as well, which makes you a little nervous about snapping something. All of this makes it a bit tricky to pull off really dynamic poses freely — I just wish they'd tuned the joints to be a little smoother before release.

For accessories, you get two alternate right legs and a right arm for recreating those signature dynamic poses. The face can be swapped between a standard and an angry version, though the difference between the two isn't super obvious. There's also a wide-open mouth head provided as a separate swap-out part, but you'll need to transfer the four rear armor parts from the standard head over to it. The eyes are handled with stickers in 5 different directions, so you can pick whichever look you prefer.

One thing worth noting — as shown in the review photos above, you need to be careful when removing part A23 from the runner. This part is used for the articulated wrist, and it has a peg on it designed to plug into the hole in the hand. The problem is that this peg is positioned in a way that makes it look just like a gate, so there's a real chance you'll cut it off thinking it's one. That's exactly what happened to me — I had no choice but to use thick double-sided tape to attach the wrist and hand together. Hopefully you won't make the same mistake I did... T_T

All in all, this is a kit that brings a character from a hugely popular modern manga to plastic form, and its strong proportions and sculpt are its biggest selling points. The articulation leaves a little to be desired, but there's a lot of fun to be had recreating poses from the source material. Either way, if you've enjoyed watching the Kaiju No.8 anime on Netflix, this is definitely an item worth picking up. :-)
