This kit is Masked Rider 1 (Shin) released in the Figurise Standard line. Up until now the lineup had been focused on Heisei/Reiwa Riders, but finally a Showa Rider — the true originals — has made its appearance. And leading the charge is the most foundational of them all: Masked Rider 1 (Shin).
To give a bit of background on Masked Rider history — it's divided into three eras: Showa Riders (1971–1994), Heisei Riders (2000–2018), and Reiwa Riders (2019–present). The Figurise Standard line had already covered all 20 Heisei Riders, and some Reiwa Riders as well. Now at last, the lead character of the very first Showa Rider series has arrived. Masked Rider 1 himself is split into Old and New versions, with the first half of the show featuring green armor, boots, and helmet, and the second half switching to silver.
This kit represents the second-half Shin Ichigo, featuring the silver color scheme with added silver stripes. Since Shin Ichigo gained a whole arsenal of new techniques during the show, Masked Rider 1's Shin form tends to feel more like the true main character compared to the original form.
Either way, this is the first kit to kick off the ambitious Showa Rider lineup — the original Masked Rider himself. The proportions are shorter and stockier compared to more recent Masked Rider kits, but that actually makes it sync up really well with the source material. On top of that, the overall articulation has been bumped up a notch. The range of motion at each joint isn't extraordinary on its own, but everything works together in great harmony. In short, you can get the pose you want in just a move or two, and it pulls off dynamic yet natural stances with ease. Add in solid joint strength on top of that, and you've got a kit that's just a pleasure to pose and play around with.
That said, being an early-era Masked Rider, accessories are on the slim side — you only get 3 hand types and 2 muffler options. But the base figure itself is such high quality as an action figure that it's plenty fun even without extra accessories. Also, probably due to the proportions, there's no stand hole — instead a small waist-grip stand is included. It doesn't hold as securely as a pin-type stand though, so displaying it in mid-air poses can feel a little precarious.
All in all, this is a historic debut for a Showa Rider plastic model kit. It pulls off natural, comfortable posing better than any previous Masked Rider kit out there. Having built every Figurise release up to this point, I can confidently say this is top-tier among action figure model kits in the lineup. If you're a Masked Rider fan, this is an absolute must-buy — and even if you're just into action figure model kits in general, this is one you really don't want to miss. :-)
