Following Kamen Rider, Ultraman has now joined the Figurerise Standard lineup — but it's not the classic spandex-suit Ultraman we all know. Instead, it's the B Type from the comics serialized in Monthly Heroes. As you can see, the design is closer to Iron Man than traditional Ultraman, which gives it a slightly unfamiliar feel, but it's undeniably cool. 

The basic build follows the standard Figurerise Standard formula, but there are quite a few special extras thrown in. The red parts use gloss injection molding, and the silver parts have an Extra Finish coating, so even a straight build looks pretty premium. There's also a dedicated LED unit that lights up the Spacium Core on the chest and the eyes — you can switch between two Spacium Core glow colors, red and blue, with the press of a button. The LED unit requires 2 LR41 batteries, which aren't included, so you'll need to pick those up separately.

Articulation and joint strength are solid, just like previous releases — comfortable to pose with good hold. Effect parts for the Spacium Blade, Spacium Slash, and Spacium Ray are included so you can recreate scenes from the story. On top of that, the "Mars 133 Kai," an original weapon designed by the Hobby Division — reportedly designed by original comics creator Eiichi Shimizu — has been added as well. A clear display stand for Figurerise Standard is also included, making this an overall very luxurious package.

The premium contents come with a premium price tag of ¥4,500, making it one of the pricier kits in the lineup — but it's definitely worth the money. Longtime Ultraman fans might see it as just another Iron Man-style suit, but taken on its own terms it's a genuinely cool kit, so if the style appeals to you, I'd highly recommend it.

On a side note, looking at this kit, I can't help but think it'd be amazing if Bandai struck a deal with Marvel and released Iron Man suits as Figurerise Standard kits — and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one thinking that. :-)
