Gundam Base MG

Hyaku-Shiki Ver.2.0 [Mechanical Core Plating]

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the Gundam Base exclusive MG Hyaku-Shiki Ver.2.0 [Mechanical Core Plating]. Following the previously released RG Sazabi [Mechanical Core Plating]it uses the same approach — a coating applied to the inside of the clear armor parts. The inner mold detail is visible from the outside, and the coating gives off a deep, rich gloss through the clear parts.

The base kit's structure and accessories are MG Hyaku-Shiki Ver.2.0identical, so for this review you really just need to focus on the unique coating effect. Articulation and joint strength are still solid, and the look is definitely different from the old Extra Finish-style semi-gloss gold coating.

Visually, the coating applied to the inside of the clear yellow parts gives off a distinctive, deep reflective quality. Compared to the RG Sazabi, there's less inner armor mold detail, so the detail-enhancement effect is relatively modest. Instead, the real appeal here is that bright, luminous quality unique to gold — and in terms of the reflective effect alone, it actually looks better than the RG Sazabi. The relatively smaller number of plated runners also brings the price down to ¥16,000, cheaper than the RG Sazabi's ¥19,000 — though it's still more than double the standard plated kit's ¥7,800.

One quirky thing: since the backpack wings are each a single part, it apparently wasn't possible to apply the Mechanical Core Plating effect to both sides at once. So the wing runners are included twice, with the coating direction reversed on each set. (Everything except the wings is pure leftover parts..)

As the second kit to feature Bandai's most premium plating technology, it definitely delivers a look that sets it apart from the standard release. It's got slightly less impact and detail than the RG Sazabi version, but the bright, deep gold gloss more than makes up for it as its own selling point. Either way, it's a genuinely stunning kit visually, so if the style appeals to you, it's definitely worth seriously considering a purchase. :-)
