Going Merry Flying Model

Kit Review

Straight build

After the One Piece Going Merry got a plastic model release, the "surely not..." moment turned into a "yep, called it" ^^; The flying version of the Going Merry as it appears in the show has been released as a kit. As you'd fully expect, it's a variation kit with only a few parts changed.

Basically, all the parts from the original Going Merry are included as-is, with the head section changed and a tail and wings added on both sides. On top of that, three new figures have been added: a Nami figure with just a slightly different arm pose, Robin sitting in a chair, and South Bird.

Just as the kit name says, it's really just the original kit with a few wings and figures added, so there isn't a whole lot to talk about — it feels like a kit whose main significance is simply "hey, the flying version from the show got a kit too." The satisfying, smooth assembly experience is the same as before, and the color separation being handled largely through a ton of seals is also unchanged.

One issue that came up with the Flying Model is that the kit was already pretty tall to begin with, and now with the wings the width has grown to over 50cm, making it a real pain to display and store. -.- On top of that, the tail section doesn't hold in place well due to the weight, so it looks like you'll need to glue it.

In the end, this is the kind of kit you just enjoy building and appreciate for how it looks — but the storage headaches alone make it a bit hard to recommend. Unless you're a die-hard One Piece fan, if you're looking at kits in this line, I'd honestly point you toward the Thousand Sunny or the standard Going Merry instead ^^;
