Go-Saurer

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

Go-Saurer, which aired in Korea under the name "Captain Saurus," has been released as an HG kit. Since the English name is "Go Saurer," you really need to space it out properly when reading it — otherwise it sounds a bit off. (No, it's not what you're thinking.) It's also commonly called "Go-Saurer" in the Japanese style.

The basic concept is that three dinosaur mechs (Land Stego, Mach Ptera, and Thunder Brachio) combine to form the flight mode Zaura Jet and the robot mode Go-Saurer. This three-way separation/combination and transformation gimmick is implemented with a high level of polish. As you can see from the transformation process above, the nose piece, head antenna, and Thunder Brachio head do require separate parts swaps, but most of the gimmicks are handled through actual transformation mechanics. The stability after transformation is also solid, making the whole process really fun.

On top of that, over 10 molded colors are used, so even a straight build delivers a vibrant, show-accurate color scheme. Despite all the transformation gimmicks, the proportions, articulation, and joint strength are all impressive. The articulation isn't super flexible due to the transformation mechanics, but for a transforming kit, this is more than good enough.

A few minor gripes: the 3-part hands mean you have to disassemble and reassemble them every single time you want the figure to hold or release a weapon. The grip is great as a result, but it feels like this level of disassembly could've been avoided. Beyond that, the neck tends to pop off relatively easily, and while the hinges on the large wings can be locked by moving them up or down, there's a bit of play in them that makes them feel slightly loose.

All in all, this is a well-executed transforming kit — the build feels smooth, the transformation goes smoothly, and it's just a satisfying kit to handle in every way. If you have fond memories of Go-Saurer, this is a highly recommended pick, and even if you're not familiar with the source material, any fan of mecha model kits will have a great time with this high-quality Bandai transforming mecha kit. :-)
