Mailes Kenbu

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the Mailes Kenbu, released as No. 1 in the Kyoukai Senki HG series. As the main unit of the show, it's structurally almost identical to the HG Mailes Byakuchireleased as No. 0. The exterior design is different, but the flexible articulation, the chest cylinder gimmick, and the weapon rack are all carried over as-is.

So just like the HG Mailes Byakuchi, this comes out as a top-tier action figure kit with outstanding articulation and solid joint strength. You can still pull off dynamic poses with ease, and it can recreate just about any pose from the show nearly perfectly. On top of that, you get the Chonyeoljinsik Combat Straight Sword and a 60mm portable machine gun as weapons, and there are also swap-out parts included to recreate the unfinished state.

One thing worth pointing out is that the ankle sideways range of motion is a bit narrower compared to other Kyoukai Senki kits. It's caused by interference from the ankle armor — though since the other kits bend so far, it just ends up looking relatively limited by comparison.

Anyway, purely in terms of quality this is a hard kit to fault, but it hasn't gotten as much attention as it deserves — partly due to opinions on the source material, and partly because of the love-it-or-hate-it reverse-joint proportions. If you can set those preconceptions aside though, this is definitely a mecha plastic model that's well worth having a good time with. :-)
