Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is Brave Reideen, released as part of the Mechanic Collection line. I personally have a soft spot for Reideen — I built the Academy version countless times as a kid, so seeing it renewed at this level of quality is genuinely moving.

The basic format is the same as the previous releases — Mazinger and Getter No. 1 — but since the structure is quite different, a completely new frame runner is used instead of a shared one. The shape has changed, but the feel is very much the same: the joints are still stiff. In terms of articulation, the leg range of motion is noticeably narrower than the previous kits, which I think is more of a design issue than anything else.

Reideen has a more complex color scheme compared to Mazinger or Getter, but thanks to excellent color separation, the straight build already looks nearly perfect. The red stripe down the center of the legs is handled with a sticker, but the red sections on the sides of the thighs and the complex color layout around the face are all done through parts separation.

The God Block shield that attaches to the forearm can be reconfigured into the God Boomerang and God Breaker through parts swapping, and the signature bow weapon, the God Gōgan, is nicely reproduced complete with an arrow. A dedicated right arm and hand are even included specifically for the God Gōgan, so you can pull off a pretty convincing firing pose.

There's also a transformation feature into God Bird mode, achieved through a simple process of closing the face armor, bending the legs, and swapping the arms for wings. That said, there's no landing gear and no way to put it on a stand, so displaying it in this mode is a bit awkward.

In terms of hands-on build quality, it feels a slight step down from the previous Mazinger and Getter kits. The articulation feels a bit stiff, the shoulder armor keeps falling off, and the covers on either side of the face don't lock in securely so they keep going crooked — little annoyances like that. Still, there's a lot going for it in terms of feature implementation and overall looks, so it's forgivable to a degree ^^;

All in all, this kit is significant simply for the fact that the beloved Reideen has been renewed in such spectacular fashion. It has a few shortcomings, but for old-school fans who remember Reideen, this is definitely one I'd highly recommend :-)
