This kit is the Shin Mazinger Z released by Bandai in 2009 to coincide with the anime of the same name. At first glance it might look like a continuation of the Mechanic Collection line from the early 21st century, but it's officially a separate lineup. The contents and build quality differ from the Mechanic Collection, though in the big picture you could still consider it part of the same family of robot model kits.

Unlike the Mechanic Collection Mazingers which were based on plastic frames, Shin Mazinger Z uses a polycap-based joint structure, which makes the joints move much more smoothly. The black exterior also features gloss injection, giving it a shiny reflective finish that makes it look quite different visually.

On the downside, it uses standard two-part split armor pieces instead of slide molds, so seam lines are noticeable in places. And while the joints move smoothly, they feel a bit looser compared to the stiffer plastic frame. That said, they're not floppy by any means — joint strength is perfectly acceptable overall.

Like the Mechanic Collection Mazinger Z, the Hover Pilder and God Scrander can be detached, but there's no Rocket Punch gimmick.
